Week #2 – Social Networking

Ophelia Chong will be speaking to the class on Monday. Please take the time to review her site and her various web presences. She is a great resource when it comes to social-networking and will provide some very valuable information that will assist you during the coming weeks and well afterwards.

Not allow of you have signed up for the class’ Facebook presence. Please do so by Monday and please include a blog entry ASAP. This is is where I and the rest of the class will be finding updates to your blog. You will have to added the Google Analytics HTML code to your website so you can begin recording traffic data to your sites.

Assignment #2 – Photographer Interviews

Interview two people who identify as working photographers. They can not be current students. Choose 1 photographer who you believe is “succeeding” and another one that you identify as “struggling”. You don’t need to tell your subject, which they are. Talk to them about the status of their careers and what they are doing or not doing to influence that. Ask questions about networking, promotions, advertising, etc.

Write a 500 word evaluation on each subject with your assessment as to why each is succeeding or struggling. Try to identify what choices each is making which you believe has made the greater impact either good or ill to their careers. Be prepared to do a presentation on each subject for class. You can bring samples of their work or refer to their website during this presentation.

You will be submitting the written part of this assignment via my Dropbox account by the next class session for full credit. I will be e-mailing you the link to the Dropbox folder which you will use for the duration of the class. Submit the text as a .txt or .doc file.

Questions to consider for your conversation?

  • How long of you been in business as a photographer? Part time? Full time?
  • What kind of work do you specialize in? Editorial? Advertising? Commercial?
  • What are the biggest strengths of your business? What do you think you could be doing better?
  • What do you know know that you wish you knew when you started as a photographer?
