Assignment 

Part I: Multimedia

  • Complete shoot and interviews to provide more time for editing the 1.5-2 minute video.
  • Prepare questions for video editing primer scheduled for the next class session.

Part II: Blog

  • Write a blog entry on the details of this production and your role on this assignment. Describe what you expect to be some of the challenges you expect to face in this production and how you expect you and your team to handle them.

Assignment #2

Part I. AARP Editorial/Multimedia Assignment 

  • Find subject and location for interview & shoot
  • Compile and complete production docs (schedule, crew roster, estimate, shot list, equipment inventory)
  • Produce a storyboard or shot list based on the key points of the pre-interview (due only for final production book).
  • Prepare for production presentation (DRM and PC)
  • Conduct an audio interview with one of  your team mates and submit edited audio files and e-mail me a 30 second clip. 

Part II. Blog Entry 

  • From the recent assignments in this course, I want you to write about what considerations you would now make when hiring someone to assist you on a paid shoot.
  • What are the 3 strengths you would be looking for and what are the three weaknesses.
  • Try and site some examples of what you have learned in the last two assignments which informs these weaknesses and strengths.

  • On your blog, write about 2 photographer who you discovered on the web, who you feel have effectively promoted themselves and their work. Explain with specific details what it is you think that they have been doing correctly that you would likely model your efforts after.

Assignment #3

Part I. Psychology Today Cover Assignment

  • Come up with a concept cover for an issue of Psychology Today based on the topic of “dreams”.
  • Find subject and location for shoot
  • Compile and complete production docs (schedule, crew roster, estimate, shot list, equipment inventory and mock-up of photograph)
  • Prepare for production presentation (DRM and PC)

Part II

  • Using the editing techniques that I discussed today create an edit for this or another body of work and create a mini portfolio that can exist as printed image or a gallery selection on your website.
  • On your blog, write about the process of creating an edit of these image as compared to what you have traditionally done in the past. How is this selection of images different?

Part III:

  • Reading Assignment: View at least 3 of these videos entitled Facing the Future.
  • Write 3 multiple answer questions with the correct answer to the next class session.

Assignment #2

Part I: Editorial Assignment

  • Amend docs based on comments in class today (estimate, schedule, equipment list, etc)
  • Shoot and edit images and submit 20 selects on USB disk w/delivery memo.
  • Submit Project bible and include final invoice, delivery memo and project assessment. (DRM)

Part II: 

  • Write a blog entry on a personal project of another photographer that would have loved to have done yourself. Explain the details of their project and why it resonated with you. Describe what your own dream personal project would be and why you would be th ideal person to do it. What’s standing in your way of doing it?.
  • Write 3 multiple answer questions based on the article listed below. Include four possible answers and please indicate which is the correct answer.

Part III:

  • Print 24 4×6 prints of your body of work which captures the three word you chose to represent your work in the previous class. This can be work that you have included in your current portfolio, but can also include personal work or other bodies of work. The image should represent the type of work you want to do professionally. (Do not print any larger prints)

Welcome to the the Fall 2012 Session of the Working Photographer II  course. I am looking forward to collaborating with you in the coming weeks to develop your careers as professional photographers.  Please utilize this website as a reference and as a resource for all the things that we discuss and work on in class.

Assignment #1

Part I. Editorial Food Assignment

  • Include sample shot or materials

Part II

  • Create WordPress blog w/ entry on your role in first editorial assignment and share what you hope to learn from this assignment as well as the course in the coming weeks.  (remember to link to WPII Facebook page)
  • Write 3 multiple answer questions based on reading material (see below). These questions must be based on the reading assignment and offer 4 potential answers. You must include a notation for the “correct” answer in order to receive full credit for this assignment. The questions must be thoughtful and reveal your understanding of the reading material. If it does not meet this criteria, you will not receive a credit for the submission.
  • Bring in your current portfolio

Assignment:

  • Submit final multimedia. Please bring two copies. One should be on a disc for my records and the other copy should be on a portable HD so that we can easily transfer it to the computer for viewing.
  • Submit 2 CDS with all the photographic and multimedia work that you created in the role of DRM. One will be for me and the other for the department.
  • Submit the final production book, reflecting the changes and notes made in the last class session.

Assignment:

Work on delivering a production bible with all the details of the on-location production. It should include the much of the material which is normally expected. This time include the final invoice and the delivery memo. This should be a thorough production book which reflects on the considerations for an on-location shoot: hotel, rental, tolls, location fees, et all.  Nothing should be left to chance. As mentioned before, the production fee for this is $75,000. This contact person for the job is Bruce Klein and the company is All Sport Inc.

Please bring three copies to class. One for yourself, one for the team and one for myself. Everyone on the team should be able to defend or explain anything in the production book. So be prepared.

Assignment Final – Athletic Apparel Commercial Assignment

Part I.

  • Come up with a idea, subject and setting for a pieced based on the L. Armstrong Quote “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.”
  • Find a subject and scout for the still and multimedia shoot.
  • In the estimates and invoices, the shoot should be written up as it were being shot in San Fransisco. So, consider costs of travel, hotel, rentals, food, etc in the financials).
  • Come in with a storyboard for the multimedia and shots of locations. (This is mandatory).
  • Compile and complete production docs (schedule, crew roster, estimate, shot list, equipment inventory)
  • Prepare for production presentation (DRM and PC) – Remember that there are two DRMs for these final two assignments.One is for the multimedia shoot and the other for the still shoot. In your production book, please indicate which DRM is responsible for which part of the assignment.
Part II.
  • Write a blog entry on what has been the most challenging aspects of taking this class and how you resolved or worked through those issues.

Assignment:

Part I: Design a promo piece based on the edits of your work that you have produced over the last two weeks. Create a look and design that you think best showcases your work and that you think would allow you to stand out. Be prepared to explain the selection of images and the design. If you are doing single card, you should bring in a series of 4 which you would distribute over the course of a year.

Part II: Complete a list of the Top 10 people you would like to work with, who you would target for a 2-year promotional campaign. Include their full names, title, publication or company, mailing address and if possible e-mail address. Be prepared to provide a detailed background on 2 of these people for class including their professional history at their current and prior positions.

Part III: Blog Entry

Write a blog entry on one of the people who you are interested in working with. Explain who they are, who they work for and why you think they and their publication/agency would be a good fit for your work. Provide a link to a body of work that they are responsible for that you believe strengthens your assertion.

Part IV: Reading Assignment:

Write 3 multiple answer question on the Mike Zane interview and submit 3 multiple answer questions based on it. Bring in a printed copy of the questions with the correct answer.

Assignments: 

Part I: Write a short essay that describes a personal body of work that you’ve created that is most represesents your ideal goals as a photographer. Choose three descriptive words, preferably adjectives (colorful, vibrant, emotional, etc) that you feel encapsulates these images.Post this on your blog before the class session.

Part II: Print 30 4×6-inches cut prints of the body of work that you have referenced in your essay. Do not bring in larger prints or uncut prints or contact sheet. Only 4×6 prints will suffice.
